Captain Emily is a bird nerd who loves photographing and showing off the different species of birds in her area. Join her to explore the bird rookeries for some phenomenal bird watching.
Manatees, also known as Sea Cow received its nickname because of the way they graze the seagrass beds as their main food source.
The winter months are usually the best opportunity to get a close view of this gentle giant. Manatees are originally from the West Indies so all their blubber insulates them from the heat and unfortunately manatees do not live well in colder water temperatures. During the cold water moths manatees congregate in warmer canals, lagoons, springs and the power plants aka the manatee spa.
If traveling in the warm water summer months you might catch a glimpse of a manatee catching a ride with the currents along the gulfside shoreline. Sightings are a little more challenging this time of year because the sea cow is out enjoying the warm water temperatures living their best sea cow life.
Birds of prey like bald eagles and ospreys return to their nests in the fall to reunite with their lifetime partners and start nesting season which usually lasts till late spring or early summer. You will see and hear these birds all over the islands.
